The Roosevelt Roughriders competed in one of the toughest high school tournaments in the state this past weekend and saw some success with the young squad. The boys were led by Abel Fanuel and Sam Gumm who both placed 15th in their respected weight brackets.
Teams from all over the state of Iowa, Illinois and Wisconsin come to compete in this two day battle. Pre-season ranked wrestlers are out to show they belong where the are ranked en route to a state title come February. For Roosevelt, it is going to be a grind of a year beings that they have a lot of young bodies in the line-up but that only means success in the future seasons. Coach Dotson has a fighting mentality that he enstills in the wrestlers and they go out to compete. They are known for the "no giving up" attitude and it showed this past weekend. It will be an exciting year for the Roughriders, thats for sure.
The Roughriders are back in action this Thursday as they take on the Mohawks of Mason City at Pomerantz Gynmasium. JV matches will start at 6:30 with Varsity at 7:30. Mason City is led by 2-time state champion, junior, Cullen Schriever. Cullen is one of the nations best wrestlers in his weight class. He is definitely an exciting wrestler to watch compete.
